the related and interacting aspects of reality.

Biting Through
In our
Reading for you today, we see the signs of a
momentous change in your life, arising from a
decision that you are now called to make. The
best expression of this idea, in a general form,
may be seen in the image of Biting Through, which
we have drawn for you from our Chinese Oracle,
the so called I Ching, or Book of Changes. In the
so-called Judgment verse that has been associated
with this image from very ancient times, the
oracle says, “Biting through has success. It
is favorable to let justice be
administered.” And in the central verse
associated with the image of Biting Through, the
oracle says, “Thunder and lightning: the
image of Biting Through. Thus the kings of former
times made firm the laws through clearly defined
penalties.”
Let me
emphasize the idea that “law” pertains
to your situation. It is “Divine Law,”
in the sense of regularity in Nature, the logic
of cause-and-effect, by virtue of which good
finds reward, and sin finds punishment.
In the
image of Biting Through, you are shown how you
need to go about removing obstacles to progress.
Quite literally, the image describes the jaws,
and something obstructing their coming together.
In this way, the oracle describes figuratively
obstacles to unity, for the closed mouth is a
symbol of unity. Unity is the result of biting
through obstacles, and, obviously, this is
explicitly expressed in today’s Reading by
the transformation of the image of Biting Through
into the image of Gathering Together.
Let me
put all of this in words that refer specifically
to your particular situation. You have a capacity
for true fulfillment in the giving and receiving
of love in your relationships. Think of this as
the “law” of your God-given nature as
an individual in this lifetime. However, one
particular relationship in your life at this time
has developed into an obstacle to the fulfillment
that I’ve referred to, and removing that
obstacle therefore constitutes an administration
of the “law” of your being.
A
“law” could be thought of as a
“measure” of right and wrong. In fact,
we call the tool of measurement a
“ruler”, which is a material expression
of the law by which things are measured. Thus,
everything we do may be measured against the
Moral Law of the Universe. Nothing less than this
is called for in your situation, for it is
necessary first for you to measure the right and
the wrong of the obstructing relationship that I
referred to in the last paragraph, and then to
remove it.
In the
image of Biting Through, the idea of action is
paired with the idea of clarity of mind. Laws
have to be administered in perfectly rational
ways, according to objective measures of their
effect in the world. The only laws we are
concerned with here are the laws of your own
being that point toward perfect happiness and
fulfillment. Another way of expressing this is to
say that your God-given NEEDS are the measure of
the rights and wrong of the relationship in
question.
