The image of Three Pentacles describes the formulation and elaboration of plans and strategies. We often refer to it as the image of the builder's blueprint. It necessitates the coordination of all the elements and people that go into making an enterprise a success. As one excellent commentator has suggested, it is the image of the worker ant, not the carefree grasshopper. Its advice is to buckle down to the nitty-gritty of the task at hand, studying its requirements, analyzing the projected time frame and the scheduling it entails, while at the same time anticipating all the various possible problems that might arise. When these things are done, the image portends success and satisfaction in a job well done.

During the "dot-com" madness of the late 90s, a client came to us with giddy projections of future wealth that she anticipated through the investment that she planned on making in an Internet "incubation" firm. The appearance of the image of Three Pentacles, in a sadly reversed position, gave us pause to consider the possible downside of her great enthusiasm. We counseled caution, and a closer examination of the specific strategies that the firm was following in its pursuit of the gold. Unfortunately, the prevailing temper of the day won out over our more tempered admonitions.
