The Six of Pentacles

The image of Six Pentacles is the emblem of charity. And of charity, we can best recall the words of St. Paul: "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." Apart from this all important aspect of the image, however, there is also in it a generalized reflection on giving and receiving, as these apply to material goods and money, knowledge and advice, support and sponsorship, kindness and warm feeling, etc. Then, in a subsidiary sense, these ideas give rise to a view on relationships in reciprocal terms of domination and submission, leadership and fellowship, teaching and learning, etc.

One of the most common portents conveyed by the image of Six Pentacles concerns the need and desire for financial support. Thus, when a client called asking if she could expect her family to support her if she decided to quit her job and pursue a career as a rock-and-roll star, we drew the image of Six Pentacles in a reversed position. They are uncommon parents who will go so far in the support of a child. We were not able to encourage our client with respect to this particular avenue of support. We suggested that it might be wise not to rely on her parents' financial support, but that she could still pursue her dream with no less intensity and determination even so. We reminded her that where there is a will, there is a way.
