In the first of these, disappointed dreams of prosperity and plenty have required a reassessment and change of direction in one's path forward through life. In the second, one contemplates the treasures built up through a time of worldly advance with a sense of bored and jaded disillusionment. The SUV no longer seems to invite adventures over roadless terrain, the game at the arena seems a loud and silly nuisance, nothing new and interesting seems to be playing on the new DVD, the martinis seem all to taste like medicine. In short, in the words of the blues, "the thrill is gone," and an inevitable waning of one's pleasure in the conventional good things of life has set in. Suddenly, one feels forced to ponder the deeper purpose and meaning of existence. The former situation obtained in the case of one of our clients who had lost job and paper fortune in the dot-com bust of the year 2000. After working twelve to fifteen hour days for several years, with stars in his eyes for the future, the stock options plunged in value almost overnight, and he found himself standing in line at the unemployment office, wondering what his quest for success had been all about. In our Reading, we drew the image of Eight Cups, but we could see that it was still too early in life for our client to be reconnoitering on the path of renunciation. He still had a role to play in worldly affairs, and his experience in the cycle of boom and bust just completed was best judged in terms of schooling for a more sober approach to future work and entrepreneurship. Other images drawn for this Reading portended new business opportunities on the horizon, and we advised patience and optimism in a methodical search for his next step on the ladder of success. |
