Psychic Readings from The
Psychic Internet often feature images drawn from the
I Ching Oracle. To offer supplementary
information about these images for our clients,
and for the public, we have provided this archive
of brief articles.

The
abstract images of the I Ching Oracle (usually
called "hexagrams") symbolize all of
the related and interacting aspects of reality.
In the following excerpts from actual Psychic Readings, the images of the I Ching
are discussed.

Duration
Therefore,
the advice of the oracle with respect to your
relationship with D. is to restrain your sense of
restless desire for change. The image of Duration
promises success in this relationship as
something that is measured from the point of view
of a great length of time. And, it bases this
portent of success on your own ability to remain
steadfast in your devotion and commitment to the
relationship through time. We see this as
requiring great self-possession and independence
on your part, so that you do not feel yourself in
need of what is not happening, but rather
satisfied with what is happening. Seek
fulfillment through expansion of your own Self,
without asking for what D. has no independent
desire to give you. In other words, be more
circumspect in the demands that you make. But,
all in all, your commitment to the relationship
is viewed by the oracle as the better part of
valor under the circumstances. For this reason,
in the central verse associated with this image,
the oracle says, Thus the superior person
stands firm and does not change her
direction.
The image
of Duration follows upon (in the conventional
sequence of images) another image, called
Influence, and these two images combine in a
description of the two essential aspects of every
successful relationship. The image of Influence
describes the mutual attraction between a man and
a woman, and the wooing that happens when they
come together. The image of Duration describes
the essential thing that should be considered
afterward that initial attraction asserts itself.
Thus, in an ancient verse associated with this
image, the oracle says, The way of husband
and wife must not be other than
long-lasting. And it is for this reason
that a great commentator on the image of Duration
(Richard Wilhelm) has said, In the sphere
of social relationships, the hexagram represents
the institution of marriage as the enduring union
of the sexes. The word marriage need
not, of course, be taken absolutely literally.
But the image describes that sort of commitment
as the ultimate potential for this relationship.
